Everyday Income That Lands on Your Tax Return

Plenty of Manchester residents file a return without running a business at all. Side work, a lodger or a job change can each bring you into the system. Our personal tax team shows you how each one affects what you owe.

Self Assessment Help Across Greater Manchester

Freelance Work on the Side

First, we look at extra projects for agencies in the Northern Quarter or studios at MediaCityUK. Your self employed tax return then shows profit after costs like software and equipment.

A Lodger in Your Spare Room

Next, we check your rent from a lodger. Up to ยฃ7,500 a year stays tax-free under Rent a Room, and we claim it for you.

Leaving a Job Partway Through the Year

Then, we review your P45 and pay records. People who change jobs often overpay through PAYE, so we claim the refund on your return.

Savings Interest Above Your Allowance

Finally, we total your savings interest. Basic rate taxpayers get ยฃ1,000 tax-free, while higher rate taxpayers get ยฃ500.

Who Needs to File a Tax Return in Manchester?

HMRC expects a return when income falls outside PAYE or a special charge applies. Most people find out too late, usually after a letter from HMRC arrives.

The rules changed recently, too. The old rule that everyone earning over ยฃ150,000 must file ended from the 2023 to 2024 tax year.

You usually need a return in these situations.

Self Assessment Dates Every Manchester Taxpayer Should Know

Missing a date costs money, so we track every one for you. Each client gets a reminder well before it falls due.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax also adds new dates. Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over ยฃ50,000 send quarterly updates by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. In April 2027, the threshold drops to ยฃ30,000.

As a result, you always know your next deadline weeks ahead. Our bookkeeping service can keep your records ready for each one.

How Your Manchester Tax Return Comes Together

Our self assessment process in Manchester takes four clear steps. You know what happens next at every stage.

Most clients send their records by email in one go. Photos of paper receipts work fine, too.

Hereโ€™s how each return moves forward.

  • A short first call about your income and any HMRC letters
  • A fixed fee confirmed in writing
  • Your bank statements, invoices and certificates sent by email
  • A draft return walked through with you line by line
  • Filing with HMRC once you approve
  • Your submission receipt and tax calculation sent to you

Filed Late or Paid Too Much?

A late filing penalty of ยฃ100 lands the day after the 31 January deadline. After three months, HMRC adds ยฃ10 a day for up to 90 days, with more charges at six and twelve months.

Paying late adds interest at the Bank of England base rate plus 4%. On top of that, HMRC charges 5% on tax still unpaid after 30 days, six months and twelve months.

Overpaid tax works the other way, especially for CIS workers. We claim it back on your return. For mistakes older than 12 months, our voluntary disclosure team takes over.
